Stigin It To The Man George Stigler - 788 Words

George Stigler (1911-1991) was a neoclassic economist and an important figure in the development of many of our currently used economic principles. Stigler taught at the University of Chicago, where he worked closely with Milton Freidman. George Stigler was said to be quite brilliant in his field and yet, he kept a confident wit about himself that was said to help his students enjoy and understand economics. (Sowell) Comparatively, Stigler was a sort of renascence man in the economic field, as he was well studied, versatile, and involved in many facets of economic thought. Stigler’s drive to dispute and negate old economic theory, while further quantifying existing theory, is what most would argue defined his economic frame of mind.†¦show more content†¦Price Theory is the essence of economics. It attempts to explain the utility of consumers and how that utility correlates with the supply and demand curves, and how they all fluctuate, ultimately seeking market equilib rium according to the market price. Cambridge Universities online dictionary defines Price Theory as â€Å"The study of how prices are decided and how they go up and down because of economic forces such as changes in supply and demand: Still central to much of contemporary price theory is the model of perfect competition.† Price Theory is widely accepted as the heart of economics and is taught in nearly every school in unison with the neoclassical school of economic thought. (Neoclassical Economics) The neoclassical school of thought is said to be an evolution of the classical school of economic thought, which was originally proposed by Adam Smith in the 18th century. Price theory and the perfect competition model remain central to both schools of thought, however neoclassicism incorporates the additional ideas of utility, or perceived value, and marginalism, or the extra use gained from each incremental increase. As neoclassical economics is essentially determined by the utility on a consumer scale, it has come to be known as the study of microeconomics. (Neoclassical Economics) Additionally incorporated into neoclassical economics is the theory of rational expectations.

In such cases, decision theory strategy used to give accurate information on the uncertainty. In case of risk, decision theory helps in identifying the risk factors and gives the measures to solve those risks. Using payoff matrix, it help in providing optimal decision in relation to that risks. Third areas of problem can be in case of adequate or incomplete information, in such instances, decision theory suggests various analysis tools using given adequate information to understand the situation. Under conflict situation, using game strategy a decision creator anticipates the acts of the opposite player using his own decision and strategy. Lastly, there is situation when the decision creator gets the full information and data related to problem; therefore, it becomes an easy task for the decision creator to make certain strategy with the given options, which finally will give the decision maker the highest payoff in terms of satisfaction and utility. How Drafting Can Improve Your Academic Writing

How Drafting Can Improve Your Academic Writing How the Drafting Process Can Improve Your Academic Writing Writing a good paper is not simply about sitting down, starting at the beginning and typing until you reach the end. Rather, it’s a process of drafting and re-drafting until you’re happy with your paper, each time trying to improve upon the last draft. How long you spend redrafting will depend on what you’re working on – a lengthy PhD dissertation will require more attention than a shorter paper. Nevertheless, whatever you’re writing, using a step-by-step drafting process will benefit your work. Step 1: The First Draft The first draft is an initial attempt to turn your notes and paper outline into full paragraphs. This, therefore, is where you set out the basic argument and structure of your paper, though you can make changes to these in subsequent drafts if necessary. The most important thing to do during the first draft is get something written, even if it isn’t perfect (that’s why we re-draft). Once you have something down, you can re-read it to see what could be improved, or even ask your advisor and friends for feedback. Step 2: The Second Draft It’s very rare for the first draft to be perfect. As such, you need to re-read it to get a sense of what could be improved. This may be as simple as looking for factual, spelling and grammatical mistakes. But it may also involve clarifying aspects of your argument or revising your ideas. There are a few tips which can help with re-drafting your work at this stage: Try to be concise as possible, eliminating all unnecessary repetition Make sure your argument flows smoothly, with each point leading clearly to the next Check that each of your points contributes something to your overall hypothesis Keep an eye out for formatting inconsistencies, as well as errors It’s also a good idea to save each draft of your paper as a separate file. This allows you to check older versions once changes have been made. Step 3: The Third Draft (And Beyond) Here, we again go over our paper and try to find things we can improve. With each draft you should find less and less that needs doing. Eventually, after a few passes, you’ll be ready for the final step. Step 4: The Final Draft The final draft is the version of your paper you’ll submit to be marked. You’ll therefore need to proofread your paper carefully, checking for any remaining errors. It can help to print out your work and read it on paper, as you might spot things you missed when reading it on screen.

Novel Coursework Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Novel - Coursework Example who compares human beings to androids and argues that they too can be controlled (4-11). Philip Dick also supports Shelley’s viewpoint noting that while androids may be capable of empathy, humans may be devoid of it (Dick 14). He believes that humans as individuals are not empathetic, but they can be when in a group. Octavia Butler perspective is different from the others’ because in her text, Doro who breeds people takes their humanity away (28-33). Therefore, the people bred lack humanity because their creator denies it to them. However, he seems to support the fact that human beings by nature are barbaric and self-centered. All the three texts show that human nature is difficult to understand and impossible to control. This manifests in the character of the society bred by Doro. In his comparison between humans and androids, Philip Dick also demonstrates the fact that androids can be controlled but humans cannot. This character in human beings also manifests in Frankenstein where the people are cruel towards Frankenstein apart from Victor, his creator, who at least showed some understanding to the monster. The most interesting book among the three is â€Å"Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep in which the concept of androids is well understood by humans. Unlike in Frankenstein where people do not identify the kind of creature he is, no one is afraid of androids. They are seen as a humanoid race intended to challenge the supremacy of man. In this text, I learn that androids have existed for a longer time than monsters, something only a few people know. Androids have a more mature and established relationship with humans than monsters. For instance, unlike Frankenstein, who was one man’s work, androids were constructed by the entire society as â€Å"Synthetic Freedom Fighters’. Philip Dick’s â€Å"Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?† changed my way of thinking. Like most people, I believe that androids are meant

Moral laws of the jews and gentiles Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Moral laws of the jews and gentiles - Essay Example Paul writes to the Roman â€Å"For when the Gentiles, who have not the law, do by nature the things contained in the law, these, having not the law, are a law unto themselves† (Roman 2: 14). In Romans 2: 25, He writes â€Å"For circumcision verily profiteth, if thou keep the law: but if thou be a breaker of the law, thy circumcision is made uncircumcision† (Romans 2: 25). This article explains the moral law between the Jews and the Gentiles, the relationship between Romans 2: 14-15 and 25-29, and the meaning of circumcision in the last passage. The Jews believed they were holy people who are entitled to their privileges by right, while they were rebellious and unrighteous. Paul, however, reminds them that God will judge everyone in accordance to their true characters. Paul advises the Jews to do the things contained in the law by nature. Everybody will be judged by law, and only law observers will be justified. He further clarifies that the same principles applies to the Gentiles too. The Gentiles have not written and revealed laws like the Jews, therefore, they should observe, and abide by the laws contained in the moral principles of the laws of Moses. This implies that they are a law to themselves. Their moral sense and consciences are a law. Paul does not imply that this is the law among the Gentiles, but suggests that the ethics of the law should apply to some of the Gentile’s natural characters. In Romans 2: 25-29, Paul clearly prevents Jews’ objection, those who set holiness in circumcision, and the logical observation of the law. He highlights that physical circumcision is not of any significance in an individual’s spiritual life, unless its inner interpretation is considered. He condemns those who are circumcised, but do not fulfill what circumcision signifies. According to Paul, circumcision signifies cleanliness of the heart, and adherence to the principles of the commandment of the law. Any uncircumcised man, according to the flesh, who is

Human beings mainly lose water by excretion in urine and faeces. Water is also lost through evaporation e.g. as sweat (Campbell N. A. et al. 1999, Frederic H.M. 2006) The kidneys are highly specialised organs of the body and play an important role in homeostasis. The kidney maintains homeostasis by regulating water balance, waste removal and blood composition and pressure. The kidneys dispose of waste by-products of metabolism and hence prevent the build up of toxic products in the body and to regulate the chemical components of the bodys fluids by responding to any imbalances of body fluids. These functions are fulfilled by a process of filtration of blood, which mainly includes the movement of solutes between the internal fluid and external environment. The movement of solutes is normally through a transport epithelium, in the case of the kidney it is in the form of a tubular channel; this tubular channel gives the kidney a large surface area. The kidneys weigh less than 1% of the human body, they receive approximately 2 % of blood pumped with each heartbeat. Urine exits the kidney through a duct called the ureter. The ureters of both kidneys drain into a common urinary bladder. Urine leaves the body from the urinary bladder to the urethra which empties near the vagina in females or through the penis in males. (Campbell N. A. et al. 1999, Michael F. et al. 2001) At one end the nephron forms a cup-shaped structure called glomerulus From the glomerulus a tube runs towards the centre of the kidney first forming a twisted region called the proximal convoluted tubule and then a long hair-pin loop in the medulla, it runs back upwards into the cortex where it forms another twisted region called the distal convoluted tubule, this then joins a collecting duct which leads down the medulla and into the renal pelvis The functional unit of the kidney is a nephron. Microscopic sections of the kidney show that the kidney is made up of thousands of nephrons. Fig1b shows the location of a nephron and Fig2 shows the detailed structure of a nephron. Each renal capsule is supplied with blood by the afferent arteriole a branch of the renal artery this splits into many capillaries in the capsule which then rejoin to form the afferent arteriole. The nephrons structure is closely related to its function of regulating solutes Osmoregulation is maintaining constant levels of water in the body. Cells cannot survive a huge deviation from its osmolality. Hence, cells have a continuous movement of water across their plasma membranes. A net gain of water will cause the cell to swell up and burst, while a net loss of water will cause the cell to shrivel up and die. Water is transported by osmosis around the body. Osmoregulation is accomplished by creating an osmotic gradient; this requires lots of energy and is done by maintaining solute concentrations in the body fluids. The osmolality of the body is fixed at a mean of 2905 mosmos/g. The kidney is able to maintain a constant osmolality as its able to adjust the rate of water excretion over a wide range. The volume of the extra-cellular fluid is mainly determined by the concentration of sodium ions, hence slight adjustments to the renal excretion rate have a major impact on the extracellular fluid volume. Changes in tubular sodium transport is accompanied by parallel movements of water, this results in no net change in body fluid osmolality (Campbell N. A. et al. 1999, Frederic H.M. 2006, Michael F. et al. 2001) The loop of Henle creates a longitudinal osmotic gradient across the medulla; this aids the reabsorption of water and other important solutes. Ascending and descending limb are parallel and adjacent to each other with a layer of tissue fluid in between. Fluid enters from the proximal convoluted tubules flows down the descending limb and then up the ascending limb. This is known as a counter-current flow. Thewalls of the descending limb are permeable to water, while the walls of the ascending limb are impermeable to water. The ascending limb of the Loop of Henle is made up of a thick walled tubule which is impermeable to the outward movement of water but not salt. The red arrows on fig3 show the movement of water amd solutes along the loop of Henle and the collecting duct. Also, the walls of the ascending limb contain pumps to remove sodium chloride from the lumen and add it to the surrounding interstitial fluid. Hence sodium and chloride ions are actively transported out of the ascen ding limb. This is the site of reabsorption in the kidney, here fluid from theenters and the kidney reabsorbs all the useful solutes and water. The permeability of the loop and the collecting duct depends on the osmolality of the blood and is controlled by a negative feedback mechanism by osmoreceptors in the hypothalamus A high concentration of salt builds up in the medullary tissue, this together with urea retention by these tissues, helps build up a high osmotic pressure in the medullary tissue. This creates a gradient of 200 mosm/g across the tubular wall at any point and causes a loss of water from the descending limb. The loss of water concentrates sodium and chloride ions in the descending limb. Salt concentration in the medullary tissue is highest at the apex of the loop, the tissue in the deeper layers of the medulla contain a very concentrated solution of sodium ions, chloride ions and urea. The fluid leaving the ascending limb is hypo-osmolar as compared to the fluid that enters and has a osmolality of approximately 100 mosm/g .Sodium and chloride ions diffuse out in the lower part of the ascending limb. Fluid passes down the collecting duct through the medullary tissue of increasing salt concentration, water can pass out of it by osmosis. The reabsorbed water is carried away by blood capil laries (Campbell N. A. et al. 1999, Frederic H.M. 2006, Michael F. et al. 2001) Control of water regulation Osmoregulation by the kidney involves a negative feedback mechanism. The osmoreceptors are in the hypothalamus and the effectors are the pituitary gland and the walls of the distal convoluted tubules. Osmoreceptors detect alterations of water levels and send impulses to the pituitary gland which then increase or decrease the production of antidiuretic hormone (ADH). In the case of a low osmolality, when the nerve cells are stimulated by osmoreceptors action potentials travel down them, this causes ADH to be released from their endings into the blood capillaries in the posterior pituitary gland from here it is distributed throughout the body. ADH acts on the plasma membranes of the cells of the collecting ducts. ADH is picked up by a receptor on the plasma membrane which then activates an enzyme. This causes vesicles with water permeable channels to fuse with the plasma membrane hence ADH makes the membrane more permeable to water than usual. Hence more water will be reabsorbed by the collecting duct and more concentrated urine will be produced. On the other hand, when the blood water content rises the osmoreceptors are no longer stimulated and hence do not lead to the secretion of ADH. Hence, ADH secretion slows down and the collecting duct cells become less permeable to water, so less water is reabsorbed and more diluted urine is produced  (Campbell N. A. et al. 1999, Frederic H.M. 2006, Michael F. et al. 2001) In conclusion, the regulation of water is essential for the survival of human beings and is carried out by the kidneys and monitored by osmoreceptors in the hypothalamus and controlled by the pituitary gland. Each of these plays an equally important role in the regulation of water and without any one of them the body will not be able to function in a normal manner. [Words: 1328]

Kurt Cobain: Collection Of Personal Accounts From Family Relatives :: essays research papers

Kurt Cobain: Collection of Personal Accounts From Family Relatives I would like to share some of the memories and perceptions I have concerning this unique, rare and original human being called Kurt Cobain. I knew Kurt during his teen-age years in the period from about 1979 to 1984. I was in my mid-30s and living in and near Montesano. My sister married Kurt's dad, Don, and also lived in Montesano. My grandfather comprehended the intelligence and individuality in Kurt at a time when Kurt was being beaten down mentally and physically. "Gramps" often told me of his respect for Kurt's tenacity and compassion even though he was in emotional pain. Shortly before Gramps died, he had been talking about Kurt. He looked at me and said words to the effect that he could see a nobility about Kurt that he had never seen in anyone in all his 70 years. One time, Gramps invited Kurt along on one of our steelhead fishing trips. We were spread out a few hundred feet apart along the Wynooche River. All of a sudden, we heard this horrendous combination of screaming, warbling and yodeling from Kurt, who was upstream and out of sight. Gramps told me to run up there and help Kurt, who must have hooked a big fish. When I reached Kurt, he didn't even have his line in the water. When I asked him what was going on, he just looked at me with those piercing eyes and huge grin. He said, "Oh, I'm just trying to thicken my vocal chords so I can scream better!" When I went back to Gramps to tell him, he just grinned and said, "It figures, We'll just let him be!" We can now say, "Thank you, Kurt, for thickening your vocal chords!" Kurt didn't fit the general mold of society in a logging town, and so he was beaten upon by people who didn't understand him. One day I heard that he was in a fight a few blocks away. When I ran to the scene, the fight was over. However, I heard from a friend that Kurt was assaulted by a burly, 250-pound logger type. Evidently, Kurt did not even fight; he just presented the bully with the appropriate hand gesture everytime he was knocked down until the bully gave up. To top it all off, Kurt just had that usual grin on his face! A final footnote to this small remembrance of Kurt: A wonderful picture comes to mind of a rare, sunny day when I peeked out the window into the yard. Bart Simpson: Horney’s Psychoanalytic Social Theory Essay

Psychology of Personality Bart Simpson is the oldest son of Homer and Marge Simpson on the Fox TV show The Simpsons. At only 10 years of age, Bart has already established himself in the community and in his family as a trouble-maker. He is the oldest child in his family with two younger sister, Maggie and Lisa. To Karen Horney, Bart’s experiences with his parents would greatly influence his future personality. Bart’s interactions with his father, Homer, provide a perfect situation for the analysis of a parents influence on personality development. Homer’s relationship with Bart and the other children is very dysfunctional to say the least. His interactions with his son most often consist of a highly angered reaction to something that Bart has done at which point Homer lashes out, strangling Bart. According to Horney, when children experience a lack of affection from their parents this can lead to future feelings of isolation. The anxiety that stems from these feelings effect one’s interactions with other people; whether the are withdrawn, move toward, or move against others. We can see from Bart’s interactions with others on the show that he is actively moving against others. His behavior is often defiant and he strives to master every situation he finds himself in. As he exploits the weaknesses of others to gain respect and attention, he is working to relieve the feelings of basic anxiety that stem from his realtionship with his father. Bart has two true friends, Milhouse and Ralph Wiggum, both of whom are outcasts socially and look to Bart as a leader. These types of relationships, according to Horneyian theory, satisfy Bart’s neurotic need for power and exploit as well as his neurotic need for personal admiration. As Bart’s interpersonal relationships have been effected by his relationship with his father, so too has his perception of himself. Horney believed that basic anxiety can also have intrapsychic consequences as well. Bart’s earlier conflicts with his father could effect his journey towards self-realization and result in an idealized self-image and a neurotic search for glory. That Bart has an idealized self-image is apparent from his behavior an can be observed as he acts out against authority as if there are no consequences for his actions. His belief that he is in control  of every situation is an example of the neurotic perception of his own â€Å"exalted faculties.† Bart’s relationship with his father, following Horneyian Psychoanalytic Social Theory, would greatly impact his personality development. To anyone who has seen The Simpsons, it is obvious that Bart’s anti-social behavior is a product of his dysfunctional family life and specifically, his realtionship with his father.

Khamosh Pani review Essays

Khamosh Pani review Essays Khamosh Pani review Essay Khamosh Pani review Essay Speaking to the Constituent Assembly in 1947, MA Zinnia presented his vision for the country: If you change your past and work in the spirit that every one of you, no matter to what community he belongs, no matter what relations he had with you in the past, no matter what his color, caste, or creed is first, second, and last a citizen of his State with equal rights, privileges, and obligations, there will be no end to the progress you will make (McDermott, Gordon et. Al. 759). In subsequent months, the constitutional debates revealed the deep divisions that existed within the country. Less than 2 years after Jinnis speech, the Objectives Resolution held that Islam was to be the guiding force in Pakistanis political life. Still later, the Minor Report of 1953 concluded that an Islamic state was anathema to the ideals of political modernity and that Pakistan ought to be a liberal secular state. These two conceptions of religion set up a constitutive tension in which Salamis political significance becomes ambivalent as doctrinally inflexible, historically anachronistic, and therefore incommensurable with modern statehood. This existential tension is visualized in Sabina Sumacs film Shampoo Pain (Silent Waters). Set in a Punjabi village near Rawlins, it tells the story of Ayes, a widow raising her teenage son Salami in 1 979 just after General Siss military coup. They enjoy a mostly serene existence until radical Psalmists arrive from Lahore to induct new recruits for the jihad cause and to propagate the Colonization of the country. Initially dismissive of the zealots dour persona, the impressionable Salami is taken in by the sheer forcefulness of their rhetoric, frustrated as he is by the lack of opportunities offered by his circumstances, and perhaps threatened by the educational ambitions of his girlfriend Subside. The arrival in the village of Sikh pilgrims, coupled with Salamis growing anger and intolerance, leads to the revelation of long-buried and horrific secrets within his own family, ending with Ayes making the sacrifice that she wasnt ready to make in the turmoil of Partition. The painful meaning Of the films title becomes dreadfully clear. Several scenes depict the social transformation that takes place in Pakistan during this period: the adolescent romance of Salami and Subside to the knowledge of others in the village, Subsidys simple dreams of creating her own wealth with a mixer, a ceiling fan, and a job in a big office, a colorful wedding replete with music, dance, and drinking. With the arrival of fundamentalist forces, however, we sense the burgeoning air of terror and story in the village: the postmans fearful observation that no matter what has happened, you never hang a Prime Minister, the chatty barber being warned when he jokes about the General and his grooming ritual , the wall around the girls school being raised, shops being forced to close during amaze, the Sikh pilgrims being bullied by the zealots while at prayer, and Ayes being ostracizes unless she publicly declares her unsullied Muslim identity. The character of Salami is remarkable in his ability to project both confused aggression and intense vulnerability. His transition from the natural joy of a carefree, flute-playing young man in love in the first part of the film, to the indoctrinated and sullen faux brute of the second demonstrates the process by which political ideology leads to social transformation. His personal sense of crisis through the process is revealed in scenes such as when Salami lets his propaganda fliers float into the stream, and then shoots them in frustration, or asks his mother why she isnt proud of him. Shampoo Pain is as much Salamis story as it is Essays: a woman first scarred y the ferocious tearing apart of her family and homeland, only to be devastated years later when her son is taken from her by the new claimants of the same destructive forces. Through traumatic flashbacks, the film reveals the violence of Partition in which many women were killed by their own families or forced to commit suicide to protect their honor from rape by other men. Unable to protect his women from rape, Veers father chooses such a method of maintaining their purity and retaining the communitys masculinity. Helpless against the chaos around them, and unable to secure retention from the state, communities frequently resorted to such ritualistic executions. Such practices suggest a desire to control their destiny; a desire for agency that took womens bodies to be a site for preservation. Every refuses this fate and instead submits to violence by men from the other community and dislocation from her own. At the same time, she claims space for herself, as Muslim Ayes, in her ancestral village Charka, now located in Pakistan. The film also connects local suffering to global power. The events of 1979 that engulf Charka involve global politics, as two superpowers, the United States ND the Soviet Union, struggle for world dominance. Politicized Islam is used to generate cadres of young men willing to join the American-led jihad in Afghanistan. The internalizing of these macro processes is remarkable. In an early scene, one of the organizers from Lahore reminds his stauncher companion: were here not to fight but to convince. Reaffirmation of religion within Pakistan helps identify those who will be transformed into holy warriors. During this process, communal divisions are deployed to recognize those who belong to the polity and those who are outsiders. The importance of Shampoo Pain lies in presenting politicized Islam and its connection to communality and social transformation as a process. It serves as an important critique of state-sponsored religion and its effects on peoples lives. The film simultaneously threads some of the most controversial and emotionally blistering issues of Partition, communality, the indoctrination of disaffected youth, and what it means to be female, especially in times of conflict. The simple narrative about a widow in a Pakistani village and her boy is extraordinarily effective.

Assignment 301TaskA Essay Assignment 301TaskA Essay Assignment 301 Steven Morgan Task A Candidate No: Understanding Roles, Responsibilities and Relationships in Education and Training Information leaflet To pass on knowledge is one of your roles as a teacher; however, this in part only scratches the surface. You will be responsible to know your students and their needs, so be understanding on how the learner learns. This will make not only their experience a good one, but make you a better teacher. If you have knowledge, let others light their candles at it. ~Margaret Fuller. You will ensure a safe environment where learners feel comfortable and are able to participate fully in the course content. Teachers will comply with any guidance on Health and safety and other legislation relating to safeguarding the rights of individuals whether they are children or adults with or without specific needs and requirements. You will also be familiar with relevant policies and procedures and any local standing orders, this will encourage inclusiveness and appreciation of those with differences and seeing these as wealth and not a hindrance. You will develop to promote inclusion of all those who want to learn and those who are reluctant at first to learn. You will also encourage personal achievement. As part of ensuring that you have a safe environment you must make sure that the learning environment is as needed and that optimal class participation is achievable, heat, light and access and egress are suitable for all. You will conduct getting to know you ice breakers to allow class bonding as this will help you in not only getting to know the learners but the learners being put at ease with each other. The setting of ground rules will set the boundaries of the course; group participation is the key here and will allow the learners to set some of their own ground rules. Not only will these set the limits for the class but can be used to reinforce behaviour if need be. As the teacher you will be responsible to plan and assemble the required course content which will be tailored to meet the demands of the task that you have been set. The use of different resources and learning methods such a PowerPoint, videos or handouts must enhance the learner’s experience. This has to be customized to the needs of the learner, to include any specific needs where reasonably can be met. If a child can’t learn the way we teach, maybe we should teach the way that they learn. ~ Ignacio Estrada. The delivery of sound structured lessons will be of a high standard and

Substance Abuse Policies on Workplace Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Substance Abuse Policies on Workplace - Essay Example The employer should refer the employee to an EAP program. EAP's furnish professional counselors who provide confidential assessment and short-term counseling to employees and their families in order to assist in dealing with substance abuse, marriage and family problems, stress related problems, financial and legal difficulties. The business community recognizes that everyday life stresses and more serious problems such as drug abuse can negatively affect employee attendance, concentration and productivity. Employees realize that being provided with an EAP to help solve these problems means the employer values the employee. Whether or not an employee uses the services of the company EAP, there is more respect for the employer who provides the service. The EAP will keep the employer informed of the employee's progress and compliance with treatment. Although having an EAP available is not a legal requirement, it is good business. Against that backdrop, employees know that their employer has their interests at heart. Managers should choose an appropriate time to annually reiterate to employees the company's substance abuse insurance benefits. At that time, clearly make known the company's commitment to confidentiality and interest in employees' well being. Encourage workers to take advantage of available insurance coverage if they need help for alcoholism or other drug dependency.

Electrical Engineering specialization on Circuit Design Research Paper

Electrical Engineering specialization on Circuit Design - Research Paper Example However, some choose not to be involved in engineering works as they are involved in such areas as purchasing and sales, human resource management and even law (Baker, 16). Often engineers specialize in different fields within the electrical engineering. Good examples of such discipline include control system and communications and more so the appliance parts such as aerospace, computer and medical and electric power supply and distribution (IIeee Transactions on Aerospace and Navigational Electronics, 62) In this paper I will critically examine the current improvement position of art of for computer-aided design, equipment meant for analog and mixed signal integrated circuits (Huijsing, Johan, Rudy & Willy, 77). Due to increased technology and raise in the need for communication with outside world, there has been a lot of advances in design productivity and advance the superiority of analog integrated circuit through the introduction of a new digital system. In this paper I will look into various advances and progress in this field, the innovation and motivational factors and problems encountered The current market microelectronics are featured by increasing complexities in the levels of integration, the coming up of ICs which are multi-million transistors. Such markets, markets for application-specific ICs denoted as (ASICs), application specific standard parts denoted as (ASSPs) and lastly the high-volume commodity ICs. Currently, a whole system which there before was in use one or more floorboard, through the advancement in technology, there has been a lot of integration of these devices into only some chips or even one chip (Baker, 77). Good examples of systems on a chip are such device as a one-chip TV or Camera or even the current integrated telecommunication system. Examples of this current telecommunication system

Power and Organisations Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2250 words

Power and Organisations - Essay Example But this management style does not fit other types of employees. Other types of subordinates prefer their heads or supervisors to be more lenient with them and to allow them room to finish assigned tasked in the best way the subordinate thinks he or she could finish the job faster. The employees feel like human beings whenever their opinions or suggestion and even complaints are taken into account by their superiors. Alternative Ways of Behaving. Management should apply different styles of management in order to fit each kind of individual employee. Strictness and penalties can be applied to lazy employees and awards and promotion could be given to employees who love to conquer challenges in return for the awards, citations and promotions given. Management could also implement a mixture of strict management policy for some line employees and also implement a soft management stand of giving the employees a wider room to navigate in order for the employees to better accomplish, in terms of quality and quantity, all tasks assigned beforehand to the subordinates (the sales managers, unit managers and the financial advisors) Less strictness will also lessen the subordinates' resentment or resistance to power imposed on them. Program Evaluation Review Technique. ... in this case, the financial advisors report directly to the unit managers and the unit managers are loyal to the sales managers who has a very harmonious working relationship with the unit managers and the financial advisors, the sale manager who is revolting against the strict management policy of the general manager has won the hearts and minds of the employees and enticed them to leave the company. In economics, some people prefer to be insulted and they are willing to swallow their pride and even their person than to resign from the job where they are not happy. This is because they cannot feed their family with their pride. Other persons prefer to resign from a company when their pride is hurt. Still other persons are so strong willed that they confront the management and ask for leniency or a little more space in order for the employee to move around more freely. This space will result to more happy employees and happy employees do better jobs. (Dilworth, 1993) Some employees, though, will not follow the sales manager's offer to resign from the company because these types of employees love the strictness being implemented by top management. Range and Application of theoriesIn the Critical path management concept, the financial advisor will submit his work to the Unit manger that then does some analysis and interpretation and then gives the final report to the sales manger. The sales manager then gives his sales department's summary report to the general manager who is strict in this case. If the financial advisor is lazy then the work of the unit manager will lag behind resulting to work delays of the sales manager and the general manager. (Raiborn et al., 1993)Using exchange theory, the subordinates (financial advisors, unit managers

The Internet And Its Effects On College Students Essay Example for Free

The Internet And Its Effects On College Students Essay The internet is one of the most important inventions of the twentieth century and can be a very useful and productive tool. On the other hand the internet is also designed with entertainment in mind and can be a tremendous waster of time. College Students as a group have greater access to high speed internet connections than any other group. Therefore the use or misuse of the internet can be a very important issue in the education of a college student. Never before has a person had access to as much information as you have with the internet. A person has the ability to research without going to the library, as almost every library has a website which you can use to research. In addition to the websites of libraries search engines make it easy to find web pages on whatever topic you need information on. Many news organizations also have websites which you can use to view current events and current issues of the newspapers and also archived issues of the newspaper. The internet has also become and important and vital part of education. Three of the four classes that I am taking this quarter use the internet as an integral part of the course. In my physics class all the homework is done on an internet system called webassign. You submit the homework on the internet and it gives you your grade immediately and also tells you all the problems you got wrong and all the problems you got right. Another course that makes use of the internet is my computer science class. You use the internet to do the labs for the class and can also get notes for the class on the computer science site. My calculus teacher also uses the internet and has a website that she uses extensively during class. She posts the answers to the homework questions on her website and during class she uses the projector hooked up to her computer to view the website. She also posts grades on the site and you can download practice tests and quizzes. Also at the beginning of all my classes this quarter the teacher gave out his or her e-mail address. As with all things in life there is also a downside to the internet. College students in particular can be affected by the negative aspects of the  internet. Some students can become addicted to the internet and to internet based applications like instant messaging and chat rooms. This can become a problem when the time a student spends online starts to interfere with his or her schoolwork and grades. I know from personal experience how time consuming the internet can be. I regularly spend a few hours a day viewing web pages or using internet based applications on my computer. Another aspect of the internet that can be a tremendous waster of time is computer games that use the internet. I know that this is an issue for many people here at R.I.T. My R.A. told all the people on my floor of stories about people who actually flunked out in their first year because they neglected their work to play computer games. Never before have college students had such a powerful tool to aid them in research and in their overall education. The internet is also a breakthrough in communication and entertainment and can be used in a way that hinders your education. In conclusion the positive aspects of the internet in my opinion far outweigh the negatives.

First And Second New Deals Analysis

First And Second New Deals Analysis This investigation assesses the successes and failures the New Deals. It will reveal how the First New Deal was more successful than the Second New Deal in relieving the Great Depression. In order to evaluate the successes and failures, the investigation evaluates the goals of the First New Deal and the Second New Deal. Furthermore it will show how it either harmed or saved the economy from the Great Depression. The two sources used for this investigation are History of the New Deal 1933-1938 written by Basil Rauch and The New Deal, What Was It? written by Morton Keller. These sources will be analyzed for their origins, purposes, values, and limitations. In contrary, this investigation does not assess the causes and effects of the Great Depression. Furthermore, it does not examine the initial reactions of the American people or outsiders toward the New Deal and the anger of the Great Depression. B. Summary of Evidence The New Deal created by Franklin Roosevelt tackled political, social, and economic issues. The program aimed for the conservation of human and natural resources, guided by the principle of the greatest good for the greatest number  [1]  . Some believed the New Deal was a program designed to prolong the capitalism. Meanwhile, other believe it was as the ambiguous label of Roosevelts safe multifarious program designed to make the United States safe for the Democratic Party.1 The New Deals involved series of programs aimed at ending the Great Depression during the 1930s. Thus Franklin Roosevelt was considered to saved America from the peril of the depression. The New Deal was divided into two part, the First New Deal (1933-1934) and the Second New Deal (1935-1938). The overall goals of both of the New Deals were to relieve, reform, and recover the United States from the Great Depression. The primary goal of the First New Deal was to help the United States from the Great Depression, while the Second New Deal was to reform the economy. The objective during the first period of the Great Depression was to increase higher prices for industry and agriculture, whereas the objective of the second period was to increase the purchasing power and provide sense of security.  [2]  The First New Deal chiefly benefited the big business and large farmers. Whereas, the Second New Deal benefited the labors and smaller farmers. The First New Deal aimed in restoring the economy from the top down, while the Second New Deal from the bottom up. The First New Deals objectives were to tackle unemployment and farm relief. If the farmers are unable to prosper, the industries will also not prosper because industries rely on farmers to buy their products. The National Recovery Administration (NRA) supervise employing citizens and increasing production. The government sought to stimulate the economy by paying the farmers to produce less. The Agricultural Adjustment Act (AAA) addressed farmers issue of overproduction because prices were too low. This program protected farmers from prices of surplus crops, inflation of currency and cheap credit. In January 1936, the Supreme Court ruled the AAA unconstitutional, stating the government had no constitutional authority to limit farmers production. It was soon replaced by the Soil Conservation and Domestic Allotment Act, which permitted the government to pay farmers to reduce production to save the ecosystem from erosion and conserve soil. Secondly, the Civilian Conservation Corps, Roose velts favorite program, provided 250,000 unemployed young men with a job working in the national forest.  [3]  When the NRA campaign to increase employment and production failed, they presented the Civil Works Administration provided employment to four million unemployed people to work on immediately on federal projects such as building roads and schools.  [4]  Almost a billion dollars was able to go into consumers hands. The National Industrial Recovery Act assure profit and wages for laborers. These changes were temporary because CWA ended on April 1, 1934. In contrary, the goal of the Second New Deal was social justice. Reform was declared to be inseparable from recovery.  [5]  The central objective was to provide security to the citizens who were unhappy with the stricken economy and overwhelm by the affects of the Great Depression. The federal government provided security and housing for the poor, elders, sick, and disabled. Old-aged was address by the Social Security Act of 1935. It was the first national old-aged program that provided a pension for retirees. Additionally, the federal government gave purchasing power to small business to increase profit. The government funds attempted to turn non-consumers into consumers again. The Works Progress Administration offered jobs to the unemployed. By providing jobs, workers are able to strengthen their familys well-being and boost consumer demands.  Although these programs were able to provide the population with a sense of security, it did not last because it was too weak and the some of programs addressed temporary issues. C. Evaluation of Sources The History of the New Deal 1933-1938, written by Basil Rauch in 1963, is an in depth analysis of the First and Second New Deal that investigates the successes and failures of the policies. It was written with the purpose of examining the evolution of the policies during Roosevelts economic from 1933 to 1938. The books value lies in the fact it discusses the launching of the First New Deal and the Second New Deal, the success and failures, and promises of the New Deal. Rauchs work is credible due to the authors position as a leading historian of the Roosevelts administration. However, the book is limited because hes admiration of Franklin Roosevelt. The New Deal, What Was It?, written by Morton Keller in 1963, is a collection of written sources from the period that provides evidence different perspective of the New Deals. This compendium proves to be a valuable source because it analyzes the various reasons why Roosevelt passed the First New Deal and Second New Deal. This collection of personal accounts is limited because each author has their own perspective and knowledge of the issues. Their political and ethnical stances are different from one another. The authors write those passages in order to persuade the audience of a certain situation. D. Analysis The New Deals were series of programs aimed at getting the United States out of the disastrous Great Depression. Proposed by FDR with the purpose of relieving, reforming, and recover the economy from the widespread poverty in the land of plenty, frustration and despair in the land of opportunity  [6]  . The series of laws, government actions, and social development created continuous governmental responsibility for the welfare of the economy. The New Deals introduced broad social welfare programs and generated major shifts in national political allegiances. The presidential leadership of Franklin Roosevelt must be evaluated before analyzing the success and failure of the New Deals. Afterward the goals of the New Deal and the notions of the New Deal was evaluated. Some perceive him as a major figure in the twentieth century, a man who saved American from the peril of depression and threat of fascism  [7]  . Consequently, FDRs leadership was the determining factor establishing the New Deal as a democratic alternative to Fascist or Communism. Historians such as Richard Hofstadter curtailed FDRs role as a successful leader of American  [8]  . The legislation of the New Deals was passed in a shorter time period than other important new legislation. The First New Deal attempted to restore Americas economic vitality and reform the stricken economic institutions. Rauch, author of History of the New Deal and leading historian of the New Deal, interprets the First New Deal as a desirable, democratic program of recovery, relief, and reform, made necessary by the accumulated evils of a business-dominated economy  [9]  , suggesting the success of the New Deal should be measure by social relief and reform rather than economic recovery  [10]  . Others like Edgar Robinson believed development of the New Deal was not a response to national conditions and popular demand but it was to the work of administration officials influenced by alien and socialistic ideas who without popular mandate sought to recast American society  [11]  . The topic of the New Deal is debatable because it either prolonged the Great Depression or stabilized the economy. Many historians suggested Roosevelt introduced too many programs draining the US economy of the little money it had to create as many jobs as possible. Hence, the new programs contributed to the increase in the national taxes. Federal taxes as a percentage of gross national product jumped from 3.5 percent in 1933 to 6.9 in 1940, and taxes skyrocketed during World War II  [12]  . From 1934 to 1940, the average annual rate of unemployment was 17.2; at no point did unemployment go below 14 percent  [13]  . But others suggested the programs were the best decision at the time. The First New Deal assisted in alleviating financial problems, provided jobs and improved standard of living with the creation of new roads, schools and railroads. Historians struggled to decide rather the New Deal was a good or a bad. Some believed FDR was both a radical and despot, while others believed he was a liberal. Leuchtenburg believed that most of the limitations of the New Deals were caused by restrictions imposed on Roosevelt by the ideological and political realities of his time. Ellis Hawley challenged liberal assumptions that the First New Deal was an enemy of private business interests. He argued the First New Deal was designed to enhance the position of private businesses. Ronald Radosh believed it was an effective agent for the consolidation of modern capitalism. According to Basil Rauch, the Second New Deal central objective was to provide security for the citizens of the USA. It establish security for unemployment, old-age insurance, benefits for destitute children, mothers, sick, and physically handicapped persons; stranded population rescued by better use of natural resources and intelligent distribution of means of livelihood  [14]  . Additionally, the Second New Deal did not concentrate on the recovery and rehabilitation of the economic structure but rather on social relief and reform. Raymond Mosley, an important adviser to FDR during the New Deals, reveals FDR increasing fondness for power and his pride as the source for the development of the New Deals. He conclude the New Deals had no consistency and unifying purposes; thus, the prime force directing the evolution of the New Deal was the growing demagoguery and desire for power of FDR and his advisers  [15]  . On the contrary, the editors the New Republic suggest the New Deals were too friendly with big business and it stressed the administrations increasingly sensitive response to the social misfortunes of Americans. Lastly, no event in the last four century of America beside the Civil War had stirred much controversy among historians as the New Deal. Historians still question what it actually was and mean. Some agree that Roosevelts New Deal was the only possibility of alleviating the Great Depression, but many still ultimately blame him for prolonging the Great Depression. E. Conclusion The purpose of the First and Second New Deals were to help alleviate the depression. The economy was still in shambles due o failure of construction to revive and high production prices. By launching the New Deals, FDR was able to demonstrates the power he and his cabinet obtain over the United States. The First New Deal assisted in alleviating the financial crisis by providing jobs, improved Americas standard of living with the development of new roads, schools, and railroads. Unfortunately, Roosevelt drained the USs economy of the little money it had in order to create as many jobs as possible. Franklin Roosevelt was the only reform president who attempted to restore the stricken economy. Hence the success of the First New Deal was attributed to the coincidence of good politics and the determinations of social conscience. The First New Deal was able to accomplish more goals than the Second New Deal because it provided jobs to the unemployed. The First New Deal was an immediate solu tion; it called fro a quick fix. The Second New Deal only provided a sense of security among the disgruntle citizens. Although the Second New Deal was less immediate, it was far reaching because some of the programs such as the Social Security Act is still being used today.

Genetic Enhancement of a Child’s Memory: A Search for a Private and Pub

Genetic Enhancement of a Child’s Memory: A Search for a Private and Public Morality ABSTRACT: Prospects of human genetic modification raise the question of genetic enhancement of memory. A moral framework that takes into account the tension between the roles of parent and citizen on the question of genetically enhancing a child’s memory is presented. Weaknesses of both moral liberalism and moral communitarianism are addressed: a tyranny of a powerful minority of liberalism, while a tyranny of orthodoxy and a tyranny of perfectionism plague different forms of communitarianism. A position is advanced that draws on the strengths of both a Rawlsian form of contractarianism and a moderate version of communitarianism. I argue that genetic enhancements of memory in children pose such serious wrongs and threats to general well-being that the practice should be decided from behind a Rawlsian veil of ignorance. With the cards down, as Ronald Green describes the veil of ignorance, a basic right to nondiscrimination on the basis of genotype would be negotiated. With this right in place, conflicts between the parental role and the role of citizen would be managed by the negotiated prohibition of parental decisions genetically to enhance the memory of children. Let me imagine myself some years from now as a citizen and a parent — who also happens to be a philosophy teacher — facing the question of whether I should choose various enhancements for my young child. Orthodontics, music lessons, soccer leagues, and genetic enhancement of an average memory are among the practices I am considering. I soon discover an internal tension. Ronald Green, in an article called "The Rawls Game," (Teaching Philosophy, 1986, 9:1, 51-60) provides an el... ...eligious intolerance, new definitions of what it means to be a human person have been created. In a hypothetical, unanimous agreement to prohibit genetic enhancement of a child’s memory I would join a citizenry that exercises parental autonomy and — in the face of a volatile new technology — defines a new way of understanding what it means to be a human parent. My choice as a parent to serve as a link between past and future human generations prompts me to pursue a perspective of fairness in the application of this new technology — a technology that incorporates self-interest and benevolence but makes neither self-interest nor benevolence my primary motivation as a parent. I could tell a coherent story to my child if I were able to relate to that, with the cards down, people unanimously placed genetic enhancement of a child’s average memory off the political agenda.

History Controlled Assessment Essay

Controlled Assessment Before 1914, some women were discriminated against and were seen as second class citizens. The ideal job for the working class women were found in and around the home, which was greatly related to domestic jobs. They were known as â€Å"domestic servants† as they had to do all of the house chores and obey the orders of the house owners, for example, the mother, the father, the son or even the daughter. They had a really low paid job as they had no skill in which they could rely on to get a job, meaning that they were forced to stick with the domestic jobs. However, they were guaranteed food, shelter and clothes, depending on the generosity of the employer the servant would gain more or less. In this controlled assessment I will be talking about 5 sources that explain to us how women’s lives were affected by World War I. During the World War, some British women’s lives had completely altered. Looking at the source, it tells us that the munitions girls were always good company. It also tells us that they were very generous and kind, since the girls offered to pay for the soldier. The source is a secondary source as it was an interview for a book made up of personal memories, which was written in 1990. Also, this interview was with H.V. Shawyer, a soldier during WWI. The purpose of this source is to educate people that want to know people’s personal memories and how their lives were changed by the war. This source is reliable as it was created for a book, made to educate people and since it is a book, it will contain many similar stories relating to the war and the munitions girls. Source 4 is a primary source and is a poster. It’s also an image of a woman ploughing on a farm. The source implies to us that women can do most things that are meant for men to do; therefore women are equal to men in most ways. The poster was created in 1917, which was during WWI. It was created by the Government, who were seeking recruits for the Women’s Land Army. Since the men were at the World War, the Government called for the women to take over the men’s jobs but were only paid minimum wage. For example, out of 260,000 women needed for the jobs, only 48,000 volunteered. This is because the jobs the women faced did not appeal to them, meaning that most of the women wouldn’t take up the jobs. The purpose of this propaganda poster was to persuade women to join the Women’s Land Army since the men were too busy at the war. This third source was taken from a website focused at GCSE History students, most likely created by a historian. It was created in 2006 and is aimed at GCSE History students; it is also a secondary source as it was created after the World War occurred so it also gains the benefit of hindsight. The purpose of this source was to inform and educate GCSE students studying for History. This source is quite trustworthy since it’s from BBC, a trusted website. Also, it was most likely created by experienced Historians, willing to educate students for their exams. It is also quite useful as it informs you about World War I, and how it proved to be a turning point for women. This next source I will be talking about is a secondary source and is a letter. It is taken from a letter by Mrs H. Felstead, who was writing it in to the Imperial War Museum. It was a letter created in 1976. The Imperial War Museum asked for memories from women that were involved in the War. The source was created to inform people on what women gained during the war. The source is actually fairly reliable as it informs us on what women gained during the War; however, there isn’t enough knowledge on who she is so this makes the source fairly reliable. This source is quite useful to somebody studying on how women’s lives were affected during the War as it gives us personal stories from these women, and is written from their own point of view. The last source I will be talking about is a secondary source and is an extract from a History book talking about women’s rights. The source was created in 1932 and is an extract from a History book. The source was also created by a woman named Sylvia Pankhurst. The source was created to persuade people to allow women’s rights, such as the vote. However, this is not enough as Sylvia wanted more women’s rights. The source is fairly reliable as she is trying to campaign for women’s rights by using detailed facts about women, however, she could be lying by creating false facts to help gain rights for women. The source is also quite useful to women wanting to know about women’s rights and who campaigned to gain women’s rights.

Ethan Frome Analysis essays

Ethan Frome Analysis essays Wharton emphasizes the theme of hopelessness and failure numerous times throughout the novel. As a young child, Ethan dreamed of studying science, but his dreams were shattered when he was obligated to return to the farm to care for his ailing mother. After she died, in fear of being alone, married Zeena, and ever since then, he could not seem to get away from his predetermined life on the farm. The theme is emphasizes the theme through the use of symbolism, point-of-view, and setting. Zeena cared so much about a dull pickle dish that she literally cried when she found out that it was broken while she was away. The dish shows how is unable to love people, so she gives all of her love to inanimate objects that can never return the love, proving that the relationship between Zeena and Ethan is hopeless and without love. It also symbolizes failure in the relationship between Mattie and Ethan, due to the fact that in reality they will never be able to be together. The narrator, a young engineer, tells the story of Ethan Frome. The first and last parts of the story are told in first person, while the middle part is told in third person limited-omniscient. The narrator knows Ethan as a tall, grizzled old man, and became interested in him and through many sources, including Ethan himself, educated himself about the mysterious Ethan Frome. The point-of-view is significant to the story, because it allows for flashbacks, which is the form that the majority of the novel is in. Without the use of flashbacks, the story would be much longer because the narrator would have to give more background information. In Starkfield, Massachusetts, Ethan lives with his hypochondriac wife, Zeena. They live on a small rundown, farm in a poor farming community. Ethans childhood dream was to escape the predetermined life that was passed on from his parents. He went to school to study science, but he was forced to return to the farm w...
